I have always wanted to create authentic images that make people feel. Images that are about love and genuine communication, that document those small moments that you cherish but sometimes forget. It was for these reasons that I was drawn to the Beloved genre of photography, which was developed by Canadian photographer Jesh de Rox through his experiential photography sessions. I wanted to learn more and earlier this year I attended one of Jesh’s Life As An Artform workshops. It was a tremendous experience and as well as learning great deal I made some very good friends.
The principles of Beloved photography can be used in all kinds of photography and I love the difference they make at weddings and portrait sessions. That said I was keen to photograph a Beloved session and further develop my skills so a little while back I met with Ben and Clara at Monifieth, near Dundee. We went to the beach on the banks of the Tay Estuary in the early evening and we were lucky to have beautiful light.
Ben, from Texas, and Clara, from Monifieth, first met in the USA when they both travelled to work on summer camps.
It was not long before their relationship developed and deepened over the summer months.
Eventually Clara had to return to Tayside but that was not the end of their relationship as Ben joined Clara in Monifieth and is continuing his studies in Scotland.
I love the emotion in these images, and I could not have captured that without Ben and Clara trusting me.
A Beloved photography session is very different to any photography session you may have experienced before and the resulting photographs are far more powerful, personal.
For the photographers reading this, I limited myself to using a 50mm lens partly because I wanted to concentrate on the feeling in the images and partly because I wanted to go back to basics, keep things simple.
This is an area of photography that I am continuing to explore. If you would like a Beloved Portrait session of your own or you would just like to know more then give me a call on 01241 8156455 or click on the “contact me” button below.
