I remember when I was planning my own wedding a few years ago, I didn’t really know where to start. Although you can find plenty of advice on the internet, in magazines and books I didn’t always find it that helpful – I sometimes felt that it was more suitable for brides living in some fantasy parallel universe!

Because of my own experiences it has always been important to me to offer as much guidance and help to my wedding clients as possible. I have both the perspective of being a bride and a professional who spends a lot of time immersed in weddings. Photographers are often the only wedding vendor who spends the whole day at a wedding – from the bride and groom getting ready through to the first dance and wedding reception. This gives us a wealth of experience that is helpful for brides and grooms.

However, I wanted to go further than that and share the thoughts of other brides and grooms too. So a big thank you to Colin and Carolyn for taking the time to share their experiences. Colin and Carolyn chose to celebrate their marriage with a Humanist Ceremony at Balbirnie House in Fife last year, and had a lovely intimate wedding with their closest family and friends.

I have chosen an image from the first wedding at which I was a photographer. When I decided to make the career change to wedding photographer it was very important to me that I could deliver a quality service for my clients so I spent time building experience second shooting for other photographers – serving an apprenticeship if you like. That first wedding was a nerve wracking experience and it did not help that I had not been too many weddings as I missed most of my friends weddings as I was usually away working at sea. It was a learning curve in more ways than one! However I loved the whole experience and soon realised that I had made the right decision in deciding to follow my heart and become a photographer.

This photograph was taken before the ceremony, just after the bride arrived. I like the way that the boy is framed by the bridesmaid, kilt of the brides dad and the brides bouquet as they prepared to enter the church. The expression on his face makes this photograph for me, I would love to know what he was thinking. What do you think?

Yes! | Image of the Week

September 24th, 2010

Wedding photography is about telling a story, giving a bride and groom memories to treasure for the rest of their lives. Memories of moments that would otherwise fade with time. Of all the investments that a bride and groom make when planning their wedding, photography and their beautiful wedding album is the one tangible thing that they will be able to hold and cherish in the years to come. A wedding album becomes a families first heirloom and will help a couple relive their special day for many years to come.

I have chosen this week’s image because it is a little different and illustrates the idea of capturing a moment in time.

This photographs from Dean and Dani’s wedding at Forter Castle, in Glen Isla Scotland, shows a great moment that could so easily be forgotten with time.

I really like Dean’s reaction to the moment and the different responses to this from everyone else. It isn’t every day that the groom reacts in this way during the ceremony which is why this photograph really stands out for me. A wedding is a celebration of two people coming together and I love wedding ceremonies that are full of joy, happiness and in this case exhilaration!

I chose to make the image black and white as removing colour from photographs can help focus the viewer on the emotions of the people in the photograph.

Forter Castle is a superb venue if you are looking for a Scottish Highland destination wedding. You  can get married and stay in a traditional Scottish Castle with the only other guests being your friends and family. It is also perfect if you want a more intimate wedding and is situated in a beautiful location with stunning views of Glen Isla and the surrounding hillsides. Wedding ceremonies are either held in the unique chapel, as in the photo above, or larger wedding ceremonies are held in The Great Hall.

Today’s image is from a humanist wedding at Spynie Palace on the Moray Coast. I love the tenderness of the moment and how the way the little girl is playing with the necklace. The way the emotion of the subjects of the photograph contrasts with the people in the background also adds to the story. When I take photographs I am always looking to tell a story and show emotion, I want to make people feel something when they look at one of my images, and I think I succeeded with this image.
