Heath and Nat first contacted me last year about photographing their wedding at Forter Castle in Glen Isla in June of last year but it wasn’t until January that we had a chance to meet. I was in London to present a Masterclass at the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers Convention and from speaking with them on the phone I knew that we were going to get along great. So I was really excited about meeting them but also about photographing their pre-wedding photography in London. I always love to photograph in new places and environments. I knew from our conversations that Heath and Nat wanted their pre-wedding photography to be symbolic of their time in London. They had met in Fiji, fell in love in Melbourne, live in London and are getting married in Scotland!

We met for coffee near the London Eye before going for a walk around some of the sights for some photography. I like to describe the pre-wedding or engagement photography sessions as a chance to hang out together and get to know each other better. And I take some photographs along the way.

It was a typical January winters day – windy, grey and overcast and not exactly warm but it didn’t stop us having fun or finding some colour.

There is a great skate park on the South Bank with loads of graffiti which I am told often changes overnight. It was a bit too busy to stay there for too long so we then went for a walk to the old County Hall building.

I like to keep photography sessions relaxed, fun and informal. Most of us are not used to being in front of a camera lens and nor do we know how to position our selves to look our best. It is my job, through gentle direction, to make this whole process easy and fun for my clients whilst producing natural looking images.

As it was a winters afternoon the light was fading fast, and I was eagerly waiting for the Houses of Parliament to be lit up so that we could get a little creative and play with some flash.

My clients find that their pre wedding photography session are valuable on many levels often saying that following the session they feel relaxed about their wedding photography – it is one thing less to worry about. The sessions allow us to get to know each other better and I create a personal wedding website for each couple using a selection of images from the session. If you would like to have your own personal wedding website or learn more about a pre wedding photography session with me then click here now or give me a call on 01241 815655. I would be delighted to answer your questions and arrange a chat over coffee and cake!

This week I have chosen an image from Colin & Carolyn’s pre-wedding photography session earlier in the year on the beach at St Andrews in Fife. Pre-wedding or engagement photography sessions are a great way for clients to get to know me and for me to get to know them. These photography sessions also help clients relax about their wedding photography, giving them one thing less to worry about on their wedding day.

For some time now I have had a need for some good portraits to use as profile photographs. Now, like a lot of people, I am not used to being photographed other than holiday snaps and I can’t say that I particularly enjoy having my photograph taken either. I usually feel like a rabbit caught in the headlights and end up with something more like a grimace than a smile!

However, I could put it off no longer and it was time to put myself on the other side of the camera. So last Saturday I finally had a proper portrait photography session with the wonderful Mel from Aspire Photography Training.

I chose Mel to photograph me because I love her photography and although she is not a professional photographer she is a very talented lady and has the ability to be a professional photographer if she wanted to. I also feel comfortable with Mel and if I was going to relax in front of the camera that was an important consideration.

I decided that I had better approach the session as a model client, so I arrived at Mel’s with a suitcase of clothing to choose from and an open mind. So how was it? Fun, a lot of fun. It was quite unusual being on the other side of the lens but it was a good experience and I learnt a lot about how it must feel for my clients too.

And the results? Well I have only had a sneak peek so far but I love what I have seen. This might sound strange as I do this for a living, but I just did not expect seeing ‘proper’ portraits of myself to make me feel so good.

Can’t wait to see the rest of the images….

Beloved | Ben & Clara’s Portrait Photography, Monifieth

I have always wanted to create authentic images that make people feel. Images that are about love and genuine communication, that document those small moments that you cherish but sometimes forget. It was for these reasons that I was drawn to the Beloved genre of photography, which was developed by Canadian photographer Jesh de Rox through his experiential photography sessions. I wanted to learn more and earlier this year I attended one of Jesh’s Life As An Artform workshops. It was a tremendous experience and as well as learning great deal I made some very good friends.

The principles of Beloved photography can be used in all kinds of photography and I love the difference they make at weddings and portrait sessions. That said I was keen to photograph a Beloved session and further develop my skills so a little while back I met with Ben and Clara at Monifieth, near Dundee. We went to the beach on the banks of the Tay Estuary in the early evening and we were lucky to have beautiful light.

Ben, from Texas, and Clara, from Monifieth, first met in the USA when they both travelled to work on summer camps.

It was not long before their relationship developed and deepened over the summer months.

Eventually Clara had to return to Tayside but that was not the end of their relationship as Ben joined Clara in Monifieth and is continuing his studies in Scotland.

A Beloved photography session is very different to any photography session you may have experienced before and the resulting photographs are far more powerful, personal.

For the photographers reading this, I limited myself to using a 50mm lens partly because I wanted to concentrate on the feeling in the images and partly because I wanted to go back to basics, keep things simple.

Photography Heaven

Ingredients – two gorgeous models, an uber talented make up artist / stylist, a top Dundee bespoke jeweller who works with silver, a brief to show off the talents of all involved and an afternoon to play – a photographer’s idea of a perfect way to spend time.

Dundee based Nicola Morrison makes bespoke jewellery and was looking for some images to show off her latest work. With hair, makeup and styling by Sandra Cormack ‘SC Makeup Artistry‘, also of Dundee,  and the very beautiful Lynn and Rosslyn as models it was always going to be a good day and I was delighted to be the photographer. Sandra spent the morning preparing the girls hair and make-up and we all met just after lunch at the Wasp Studios in Dundee, just around the corner from the Verdant Mill for an afternoon’s photography.

The session was great fun as we had the opportunity to experiment and try different ideas which I always enjoy. One thing I took away from the day was that my 105mm micro lens is great for portraits icon smile portraits photography photography – I would not normally have used this camera lens for lifestyle portrait photography or wedding photography but I will definitely be carrying it in my camera bag from now on.

Lynn and Rosslyn were great models, and a lot of fun to work with. Lynn had done some modelling before but this was Rosslyn’s first time and she did a great job.

A big thanks to Amanda Miller at Abernyte Antiques , near Dundee, for supplying the gorgeous vintage dresses and Alison Preuss of The Frockery, by Forfar, for the vintage clutch bag.
