Bespoke Family Portrait Photography in Forfar and Angus

A little while ago I had the pleasure of photographing Kevin, Jane, Fergus and Murray for their family portrait photography at their home by Letham and Forfar.

The portrait photography I offer is very much a bespoke service. Before a portrait photography session I like to visit the home and have a chat about what the family are looking for from their photography, what to expect on the day and the display options that I offer – from beautiful albums to gorgeous wall art such as framed prints, gallery wraps, box frames and acrylics. We take a look around the home and talk about where the family are thinking of displaying their finished images. As well as being able to advise on the display options and what would work well in a particular room, we also have a chat about the clothing that will be worn during the portrait session and what colours will look best when displayed. This helps the family decide exactly what they will wear for their portrait photography in advance and they can be confident that not only will they look good but their wall art will look fantastic in it’s chosen setting. Kevin and Jane have superb taste, and this combined with the fact that Jane has her own soft furnishings business meant that they did not really need much advice from me on clothing but I was able to guide them on the best way to display their images.

I like to start  family portrait photography in the families home. Photographs taken in your home have far more meaning to you than a photograph taken in an anonymous studio. There is also the added benefit that you will feel more relaxed in your home surroundings than an unfamiliar studio. The more relaxed and comfortable you are the better your images will be.

After a few photographs in the home, everyone is feeling a lot more relaxed in front of the camera and it is time for a change of clothes and a new location. This could be your garden, a favourite place to go for a walk or a local beach. This is something that we will have talked about during the portrait photography pre consultation. I always suggest that good places for your photography have meaning to you. It could be your garden where you have fond memories of your children growing up, the path you love to take your dog for a walk along or your favourite view. If you are not too sure of where might be a good place for your photography then I can always help you with suggestions. Kevin and Jane have a beautiful garden, so after a change of clothes we moved into the garden for some more portrait photography.

From the garden we moved to the beautiful farmland surrounding their home. We were very lucky to have a beautiful sunny day, it rained the day before and the day after!

Each purchase image receives a great deal of care and attention, with the display choice in mind, to show it at it’s best. A 10 x 8 print just does not do justice to a crafted image – professional photography really is at it’s best when displayed large on a wall or in a beautifully designed album.

We finished the portrait photography session back in Kevin and Jane’s garden. Fergus and Murray are both rugby fans and play in one of the region’s teams…

I really enjoyed my time photographing Kevin, Jane, Fergus and Murray and I know that they are thrilled with their wall displays and album. If you would like to have a chat about our family portrait photography, in Forfar or throughout Angus, how photography would look fabulous in your home give or how I help clients choose their favourite images then give me a call on 01241 815655 or contact me by clicking here.

I mentioned above that Jane has a soft furnishings business. Although I haven’t had the opportunity to use Jane’s services myself, I have spoken to people who have and she is highly recommended. So if you would like me to find out more about how she can help you let me know and I will put you in touch.

The Scarlet Bakery | Or How I Ate 10,000 Calories During A Photography Shoot

February 8th, 2011

The Scarlet Bakery are an artisan bakery based in Dundee, their gorgeous cupcakes, wedding cakes, brownies, macaroons and treats are the talk of Tayside.

Paul and Kelly, a.k.a. The Scarlet Bakery, are the creators of the most divine cupcakes and all things sweet. An artisan bakery based in Dundee, their gorgeous treats are the talk of Tayside and beyond. As well as being available in various outlets throughout the region, The Scarlet Bakery create bespoke cakes for weddings, birthdays and events. The hub of The Scarlet Bakery community here on Facebook where you can place orders and arrange for deliveries.

Paul and Kelly are also a very inspirational and hardworking couple who I have admired since I first met Kelly at a Women Ahead lunch last year. We have been talking about organising a photography session for some time now and it wasn’t a moment too soon when Kelly called to arrange a date as she needed an image for a feature in Scottish Field magazine. You should understand that my enthusiasm for photographing brownies, giant chocolate cupcakes and macaroons has absolutely nothing to do with my sweet tooth and love of all things chocolate. Really, absolutely nothing to do with it.

People have often commented that they feel like they know the subjects of my photographs even though they have never met them. I believe that taking the time to get to know my clients, to relate to them and photograph them with empathy enables me to create photographs like this. All my clients deserve the same care and attention and how better to get to know and love a heart shaped brownie than by, well, eating it? And the cake pops. And the macaroons. And the cupcakes. All highly recommended. They look gorgeous too.

Freedom Classics is a photography shoot for Irving of Freedom Hairdressing in Dundee. He wanted to create a set of images that would show the great work of the salon. The day started with make up, hair and styling, starting at the salon in Dock Street, Dundee. When the styling was complete we moved over to the City Quay area of Dundee for the photography session. This is a great area for photography with a variety of interesting backgrounds, although on this day we had to find shelter from the wind so as not to mess up the models hair. Following this it was time to go to the Apex Hotel for a restyle and more photography.

A selection of the images have been printed and framed for display in the salon as well as being used for marketing.

With all the recent cold weather and snow I had to go have a little play with my camera. When I first took an interest in photography, more years ago than I care to remember, it was landscape photography that caught my imagination. Running my own business I don’t often make much time to go and ‘play’ with my camera so it was nice to get out for some landscape photography, even if it was just in my village. The winter weather has also been bringing a few extra visitors to the garden.

Beloved | Ben & Clara’s Portrait Photography, Monifieth

I have always wanted to create authentic images that make people feel. Images that are about love and genuine communication, that document those small moments that you cherish but sometimes forget. It was for these reasons that I was drawn to the Beloved genre of photography, which was developed by Canadian photographer Jesh de Rox through his experiential photography sessions. I wanted to learn more and earlier this year I attended one of Jesh’s Life As An Artform workshops. It was a tremendous experience and as well as learning great deal I made some very good friends.

The principles of Beloved photography can be used in all kinds of photography and I love the difference they make at weddings and portrait sessions. That said I was keen to photograph a Beloved session and further develop my skills so a little while back I met with Ben and Clara at Monifieth, near Dundee. We went to the beach on the banks of the Tay Estuary in the early evening and we were lucky to have beautiful light.

Ben, from Texas, and Clara, from Monifieth, first met in the USA when they both travelled to work on summer camps.

It was not long before their relationship developed and deepened over the summer months.

Eventually Clara had to return to Tayside but that was not the end of their relationship as Ben joined Clara in Monifieth and is continuing his studies in Scotland.

I love the emotion in these images, and I could not have captured that without Ben and Clara trusting me.

A Beloved photography session is very different to any photography session you may have experienced before and the resulting photographs are far more powerful, personal.

For the photographers reading this, I limited myself to using a 50mm lens partly because I wanted to concentrate on the feeling in the images and partly because I wanted to go back to basics, keep things simple.
