Winter Scenes in Angus

With all the recent cold weather and snow I had to go have a little play with my camera. When I first took an interest in photography, more years ago than I care to remember, it was landscape photography that caught my imagination. Running my own business I don’t often make much time to go and ‘play’ with my camera so it was nice to get out for some landscape photography, even if it was just in my village. The winter weather has also been bringing a few extra visitors to the garden.

It has been a while again since I posted and I am going to make a serious effort to catch up. As an antidote to all this bad weather I am going to post some images from a golf tournament I photographed for the Befriend A Child charity, based in Aberdeen. I think it is important to give a little something back so every so often I will volounteer my photography services to local charities. Befriend A Child do a lot of great work for children and you can read more about their work here. I will also be photographing their charity ball in February.

The tournament was held up at the beautiful Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club with teams from various Aberdeen businesses taking part. There was a lot of good banter out on the course and I would like to thank everyone for making me feel so welcome.

The course is under one of the main flight paths for North Sea helicopters servicing the oil industry so hearing the helicopters flying overhead all afternoon brought back some memories from my time offshore and flying down this stretch of coastline, it has some amazing beaches and beautiful scenery. I remember how nice it always was to see green – it was almost like it was soothing on the eyes after a month or more of greyness – grey sky, grey seas, and working ships are not exactly known for their uplifting decor!

But I digress, you can see from some of these photographs how beautiful the coastline is, and the beaches are often deserted.

I know these photographs are a little different to the kind of work that I normally post but I would be interested to hear what you think. Would you come up and visit this part of the world? There are some beautiful wedding venues if you are thinking of a Scottish Highland wedding…..

The Other Side of the Lens

For some time now I have had a need for some good portraits to use as profile photographs. Now, like a lot of people, I am not used to being photographed other than holiday snaps and I can’t say that I particularly enjoy having my photograph taken either. I usually feel like a rabbit caught in the headlights and end up with something more like a grimace than a smile!

However, I could put it off no longer and it was time to put myself on the other side of the camera. So last Saturday I finally had a proper portrait photography session with the wonderful Mel from Aspire Photography Training.

I chose Mel to photograph me because I love her photography and although she is not a professional photographer she is a very talented lady and has the ability to be a professional photographer if she wanted to. I also feel comfortable with Mel and if I was going to relax in front of the camera that was an important consideration.

I decided that I had better approach the session as a model client, so I arrived at Mel’s with a suitcase of clothing to choose from and an open mind. So how was it? Fun, a lot of fun. It was quite unusual being on the other side of the lens but it was a good experience and I learnt a lot about how it must feel for my clients too.

And the results? Well I have only had a sneak peek so far but I love what I have seen. This might sound strange as I do this for a living, but I just did not expect seeing ‘proper’ portraits of myself to make me feel so good.

Can’t wait to see the rest of the images….

Do they really think that will stop me chewing the corners of the skirting board?

Tibbie is related to the westie that my parents used to have years ago. She had a lovely personality and so far Tibbie looks like she is going to follow in her footsteps. She has certainly stolen all our hearts.

I would love to have a dog, although with my current way of life it would not be fair, so I shall just have to content myself with spoiling Tibbie whenever I go see my Mum & Dad.
