The photograph I have chosen this week is a street scene from Florence. Italy is one of my favourite countries to visit and last year we visited Florence for the first time and loved it. It is such a beautiful city and a photographers dream – everywhere you look there is something to photograph. I also love the ambience of the place and can quite happily sit for hours at a street cafe watching the world go by.
When on holiday I like to get up early in the morning and go for a wander on my own with a camera. Whenever I can I prefer to take photographs during the golden light that you get around sunrise and sunset. Early mornings also have the advantage of being a lot quieter. This image was taken shortly after 6am by Il Duomo and was a very different scene to a few hours later when the streets were a lot busier and the light was totally different.

For me there is something that is very timeless about this scene and I think that is why it appeals to me. I also like the composition - the placement of the nun in the lower left third, the shadow behind her, the leading lines across the image following her the direction and the fall of the habit all help give a sense of movement and flow through the photograph.
This image makes me want to know her story. Has she just come out of the door at the far left? Where is she going? Does she have a connection to Il Duomo? Is she from Florence or a visitor?
