When I first met Shelly she described to me how she has been in the UK with her fiance, Raymond, studying accountancy. Although their wedding would be back home in China with their family, they wanted to have a ceremony here in Scotland so that they could celebrate their love for and commitment to each other with the many dear friends they have made in and around Dundee. It was really important to them to have beautiful photography of their special day. Shelly loved the handcrafted Queensberry albums and knew that with my photography they would be the perfect way to share the story of their wedding celebration in St Andrews with their family and friends in China.

My overriding impression of Shelly from that first meeting was that she was someone who has an irrepressible energy and joy for life, someone who is a pleasure to be around. The second time I met Shelly she was with her fiance Raymond and I learnt a little more of their story. From Guangzhou in China, they had met at school aged 10 and became school sweethearts by the time they were 16. They have been together ever since and travelled to Scotland together to continue their studies.

They described to me how they wanted their St Andrews wedding celebration to be something a little different and about celebrating with their friends. The photography was really important to them as they recognised that their memories of the day would soon fade and their photography would always help them relive this day. Following the ceremony, instead of a traditional wedding breakfast, they planned to have a fun picnic on the beach. I loved the sound of this and was thrilled to be trusted to tell their story.

The First Look

Raymond and Shelly had chosen to see each other before their wedding ceremony. This is something that has been happening in the US for a while now and I think it is a great idea if you are not too traditional. It gives the bride and groom a chance to really enjoy the moment and spend some time together without going straight into the ceremony and wondering if they are going to remember their vows!

It is also the perfect time for some beautiful wedding photography without the pressure of wondering if their guests are enjoying themselves and means that a bride and groom have more time to enjoy with their family and friends after the wedding ceremony.

It was one of those grey days with constant rain and drizzle, but Raymond and Shelly didn’t let this ruin their fun. Shelly is such an elegant bride and they both really wanted to have some fun with the photography so that they would have a unique wedding album to take to China.

I think these photographs show a little of Shelly’s irrepressible joy and appetite for life.

The Wedding Ceremony

The wedding ceremony was held in St Andrews Town Hall in Queens Gardens and this is where Raymond and Shelly met with their guests.

Portraits of the Bride and Groom

After the ceremony, plan b was put into effect due to the rain and Raymond and Shelly’s guests went to Rusacks Hotel whilst we headed for the streets of St Andrews for some more photography.

They wanted photographs that would show their family a bit of Scotland and were happy to let me use my  imagination and artistry to create some unique images.

One very specific request was for a photograph of the bride and groom with a typical British red post box or an old fashioned red telephone box…

These might be the kind of street scenes that we take for granted but for Raymond and Shelly’s family and friends back home in China they are something very different.

The Wedding Breakfast at Rusacks Hotel, St Andrews

When Raymond and Shelly saw the weather forecast the day before their wedding they turned to plan b and the Rusacks Hotel in St Andrews looked after them really well. After an excellent wedding breakfast it was time for some more photography around the hotel and on the 18th hole of the Old Course which was to be home of the Open Golf Championship the following week.

It really was a pleasure and privilege to spend the day with and photograph such a happy couple and their friends. We all had a wonderful day and I hope that they have a beautiful wedding with their family and friends in China.

These photographs also show that if it rains on your wedding day you can still have a wonderful day and gorgeous photography. What do you think, does it matter if it rains on your wedding day? Share your thoughts by clicking on the word comments below.

Yes! | Image of the Week

September 24th, 2010

Wedding photography is about telling a story, giving a bride and groom memories to treasure for the rest of their lives. Memories of moments that would otherwise fade with time. Of all the investments that a bride and groom make when planning their wedding, photography and their beautiful wedding album is the one tangible thing that they will be able to hold and cherish in the years to come. A wedding album becomes a families first heirloom and will help a couple relive their special day for many years to come.

I have chosen this week’s image because it is a little different and illustrates the idea of capturing a moment in time.

This photographs from Dean and Dani’s wedding at Forter Castle, in Glen Isla Scotland, shows a great moment that could so easily be forgotten with time.

I really like Dean’s reaction to the moment and the different responses to this from everyone else. It isn’t every day that the groom reacts in this way during the ceremony which is why this photograph really stands out for me. A wedding is a celebration of two people coming together and I love wedding ceremonies that are full of joy, happiness and in this case exhilaration!

I chose to make the image black and white as removing colour from photographs can help focus the viewer on the emotions of the people in the photograph.

Forter Castle is a superb venue if you are looking for a Scottish Highland destination wedding. You  can get married and stay in a traditional Scottish Castle with the only other guests being your friends and family. It is also perfect if you want a more intimate wedding and is situated in a beautiful location with stunning views of Glen Isla and the surrounding hillsides. Wedding ceremonies are either held in the unique chapel, as in the photo above, or larger wedding ceremonies are held in The Great Hall.

It is funny how life works sometimes. Colin went on holiday with a friend to Ayia Napa and Carolyn was meant to be going to Rhodes with two friends when the holiday was cancelled at the last minute. The girls booked an alternative holiday and ended up staying at the same apartment complex as the guys. After a little persuading by the girls they all went dancing one night and from then on they went out for meals together.

When they returned to the UK, Colin and Carolyn kept in touch and Colin’s first trip over to visit Carolyn included a trip to St Andrews where Colin announced that he wished he had brought his clubs! Since then Carolyn has introduced Colin to the Scottish midge (first encountered on a camping trip to Skye) and Colin has broadened Carolyn’s sporting knowledge, introducing her to hockey, golf and rugby. Colin moved to Scotland in 2009 and proposed to Carolyn on her birthday last year.

Pre-wedding or engagement photography sessions are a great way for people who are not so comfortable in front of the camera to see that photography can be fun and that you do not need to ‘perform’ for the camera. It is my job to help you relax whilst creating beautiful images that you will treasure. I do this by ‘directing’ and helping you interact with each other. That way you have fun and forget that it is a photography session. It is a bit like hanging out together, just I happen to have a camera with me. A pre wedding photography session will also help you be more relaxed about the photography on your wedding day, giving you one less thing to worry about.

Colin and Carolyn chose St Andrews beach for their pre-wedding photography, and we had a lot of fun with much laughter. Enjoy the images.

Today I am introducing a new feature to my blog – Image of the Week. It is a bit of an excuse to share some of my favourite images as well as a way for you the reader to get a better feel for the kind of photographer that I am. The images could be personal work, landscapes or from weddings and portrait sessions and I will share why I have chosen the image. I will publish this every Friday and I hope you enjoy this new feature.

Today’s image is from a humanist wedding at Spynie Palace on the Moray Coast. I love the tenderness of the moment and how the way the little girl is playing with the necklace. The way the emotion of the subjects of the photograph contrasts with the people in the background also adds to the story. When I take photographs I am always looking to tell a story and show emotion, I want to make people feel something when they look at one of my images, and I think I succeeded with this image.

When I was first starting my photography business I spent a lot of time researching the different suppliers available to me. No matter how many different suppliers I looked at, and there were lots, there was always only one choice of album supplier – Queensberry. They stand head and shoulders above the rest – from the quality of their beautiful hand crafted albums and the timeless designs to the fact that they are a great company to work with. Their customer service and support is second to none.

Queensberry put a lot of love and care into every album that they make and this video will give you an idea of what goes into crafting a Queensberry album.

If you would like to know more about the exquisite Queensberry albums and how you can have one for your wedding or portrait photography then please call me on 01241 815655 or contact me via the contact button below.
